Scientific Information: When amethyst is heated to temperatures between 400°C and 600°C, its color changes due to the alteration of the iron ions in its crystal structure. Amethyst's purple hue is caused by iron in the oxidation state Fe³⁺. Upon heating, the iron is reduced to Fe²⁺, which changes the way the crystal absorbs and reflects light, resulting in a yellow to orange coloration typical of citrine or "Madera Quartz". This specimen has been artificially heated.
